Máté Bella is one of the few composers who became a significant figure in the Hungarian music scene before turning 35. His contemporary compositions are performed by prominent international orchestras, his popular music tunes are favourites on several radio stations, and his musical theatre pieces are staged at some of the country’s most prestigious theatres. His seemingly wide-ranging activity stems from his ability to capture the audience’s attention within seconds. Máté considers it his mission to integrate Generations Y and Z into the classical music scene. The hallmark of his work so far is a musical melting pot that blends pieces composed with a fresh mindset, while preserving the essence of different genres.
He graduated in 2011 from the Liszt Academy with a degree in Music Composition, studying under Prof. Gyula Fekete. In 2013, he spent a semester in the class of Prof. Wojciech Widłak at the Academy of Music in Kraków on an Erasmus scholarship. In 2014, he received a scholarship from the Peter Eötvös Contemporary Music Foundation, and in 2017 he was awarded funding from the New National Excellence Program. He is one of the founders of Studio 5, a contemporary composer group established in 2016. He received his Summa Cum Laude DLA doctoral degree in 2018. He is currently an associate professor at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, and a member of the Artisjus Committee of Classical Music Authors, the Association of Hungarian Composers, the board of trustees for the Bartók Béla – Ditta Pásztory Prize, as well as the composer section of the Hungarian Film Academy Association.
His works are performed by several Hungarian and international orchestras, such as Ensemble InterContemporain, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Modern, Klangforum Wien, Münchener Kammerorchester, Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Doelen Ensemble, UMZE Chamber Ensemble, and the Budapest Festival Orchestra. His theatre music has been performed at the Hungarian National Theatre, Vígszínház, Budapest Operetta Theatre, Budapest Puppet Theatre, Theatre of the UdK Berlin, and the Hungarian State Opera. Among his competition achievements and awards, the Junior Prima Award, the Artisjus Award, the Erkel Ferenc Award, and the Bartók–Pásztory Award stand out as the most prestigious.
